52 Weeks to an Organized Home

By Shannen Espelien 8 Comments

When I saw this project posted on The Well Trained Mind forums, I was signed up in five minutes flat. I remember my mom always saying that everything has to have a home, and she has one of the best organized and clean homes I’ve seen without being completely OCD about it. As I’ve accumulated stuff through the years, this has been harder and harder to maintain. Add in a husband and another child, and I’ve been lost in how to get back to a fairly clutter free home.

Organized Home Challenge! So, here’s my call to anyone who is feeling the same way… sign up with me! Every week we will get an email with a goal for the week to work on and you can share on Twitter or Facebook your progress! Here’s some more from her website about the project:

You cannot expect to get your home completely organized over night, even though that would be wonderful. It just won’t realistically happen for most of us because we have too many areas in our homes that we need to address.

Plus, even if a whole crew came in and organized everything right now, like they do on some of those television shows, you most likely don’t have the habits in place to maintain that organization yet.

However, you can get organized slowly, over time. That is where The 52 Week Organized Home Challenge comes in. Each week we focus on a different challenge area in our homes and make steady forward progress.

The idea is that at the end of the 52 weeks you will have an organized home. Plus, your life and your home will run more smoothly, plus you’ll have gained the knowledge, skills, habits and routines necessary to actually keep it that way!

Trust me, maintaining the organization you put in place can be just as much of a challenge as getting there in the first place, so those skills and discipline are very much needed!

I’m looking forward to sharing our progress! Sign up with me!

For the record, I’m not getting anything for promoting this project from the original blog poster. I’m simply excited about it and want to share. 🙂

This sounds like a great challenge for the New Year! I definitely agree that if a home were to get organized by some T show or simply by magic, we wouldn’t have the skills or the accountability to keep it this way. 52 weeks will slowly ease you into this new mind set and give you the tools you need to make it last.

Absolutely! Plus, there are times where we need to purchase items like storage tubs for the thins we want to keep. To do it all in one go would be expensive! This way we get to spread it out over the full year. Hope you join us with updates!

Ooooh! Love this idea; thanks for sharing! I rotate through my house on daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal cycles for cleaning and dejunking and reorganizing, but my methods are more just intuitive self-led. I’m curious about her tips, ideas, and methods! I’ll join you!

Great! I have a system, but rarely actually follow it. I really want to get myself in line!

Yay! I’ve been good at getting rid of stuff, but I need it to all have a home! I’m looking forward to seeing your progress!
