Today’s the first day of homeschooling high school! We’re starting out with a “learning meeting” (I’m still looking for a more descriptive, concise term), where I lay out the expectations for the year, highlight some areas of her courses that I feel need attention, and just generally discuss our goals for the year. I’ve found this far more effective than the piece meal conversations we would have randomly, and I keep a copy of my notes on Google Drive for Kira to refer to in the future, if needed. While we don’t work on a strict schedule, we do have a general routine.
Kira’s homeschool high school schedule for 9th grade:
- 7:30a – Get out of bed and eat breakfast
- 7:45a – Daily wird (act of worship or obedience done regularly). In sha Allah we’ll start with discussing Imam Nawawi’s 40 Hadith
- 8:00a – Complete IEW SWI-C lesson, if she’s starting a new lesson
- 8:30a – Complete work as desired. I work with Aamina.
- 11:00a – Lunch break
- 12:00p – Lunch break over. Complete work as desired.
- 3:00p – Studio Arabiya class on Mondays and Fridays
- 5:20p – Dinner
- 6:00p – Head to fencing practice Mon and Tue
10th grade homeschool schedule:
- 8:30a – Get dressed and ready for science class
- 9:00a – Bus picks her up for her science class at the public school
- 10:20a – Kira comes back, and will play with her sisters, eat a snack, and hang out with the family for a little while
- 10:45a – Kira uses the rest of her day basically as she chooses.
- 2:00 or 3:00p – Studio Arabiya class on Monday and Friday
- 3:00p – Her dad picks her up on the days she spends the evening with him.
- 5:00p – Dinner
- 6:00p – Head to fencing practice Mon and Tue
We’ve gone back and forth with having great time management and needing a lot of help in that area. In Kira’s 9th grade year, she required more guidelines for when certain subjects needed to be tackled, and as she’s working closer to college age, I’m trying to give her more freedom to use her time as she sees fit, but also keeping tabs on making sure things are getting done with integrity.
The best tool we’ve used so far her 10th grade year has been Homeschool Planet. With their automatic rescheduling feature, missed assignments don’t get forgotten about as easily, and I can keep track of her grades directly in the interface as well!
As each year passes, I’m trying to work with Aamina a bit more, and even crafted a loose preschool curriculum for her. We do it when she has the time and attention, and when she doesn’t, we read a lot of books, and explore the world around us.
Each year brings new challenges and opportunities. In sha Allah we are using them to the best of our ability!
