First Time Mom: How to Prepare for a New Arrival

By Shannen Espelien Leave a Comment

The following is a guest post.

Whether it’s your first baby or you’re a busy mom already, there are some essentials that every newborn needs. If you’re a first time mom however, it can be hard to know what you need. There are so many clothes, accessories, and home furnishings out there for newborns but are they essential? This is a handy checklist for every new mom to check off in preparation for the new arrival, or add to your gift list.

Diapers

Diapers are something that every newborn baby is going to need. It’s an essential that isn’t fun, but has to be brought. Along with changing pads it’s a good idea to invest in some wipes and rash ointment. Diaper bags are also a great way to keep everything organized, and you can get some fashionable designs as well.

Nursery

Obviously you’ll need a place for the new addition to sleep. Cotbeds and baby cribs are a must, as is a mattress and some bed linens. Blankets and waterproof liners are a good investment and will save you time buying them later on. A baby monitor is also a good way of keeping your newborn baby safe. If you’re worried about your baby sleeping, there are some great lullaby CD’s you can buy and keep close to hand in the nursery.

Out and About

You’ll need to buy an infant car seat. These car seats are an essential as they guarantee the safety of your child whilst you travel. Head support padding is included in most makes. A stroller is another must-have item whilst on the move. A playpen is also a good way to keep your child having fun and feeling relaxed whilst on the move.

Playtime

Playtime is so important for newborn babies. It helps them to start developing their vocabulary and increases their social awareness. Introduce your baby to sounds, colours, shapes, and words as early on as you can. Books may seem a little mature for a newborn, but some are specifically tailored to this age group. Books with pop out pictures, fabric pages, and pullouts, all stimulate the senses. Some soft toys and balls are also a good buy and will make outdoor strolls and bedtimes easier.

Teething Toys

If your baby is a few months old, it’s probably time to start thinking about teething toys. There are some great ones out there which are perfectly safe and soothing. Opt for an exciting looking toy which is painted with food dyes. Preferably these toys should be made of rubber so they’re easy and safe to chew.

Clothing

This is the part where most new moms go all out. The amount of baby clothes you will receive, and buy, is often far greater than what you’ll need. Babies grow very quickly so don’t invest in a whole wardrobe of things that will need to be replaced! Sleepsuits, socks, a hat, a blanket and bodysuits, are the basics that you will need straight away. Anything else is a personal choice.
