The following is a review of JumpCourse.com. I received one course for free, and was compensated for my time, though I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
CLEP prep is a big part of our homeschool. I figure, why take beginner level classes at a college premium when we can learn them at home and save buckets of money? Let the college classes be for things that really need a college professor to explain them! With this high focus on credit by exam, I jumped at the opportunity to review JumpCourse.com. I may have tripped over my own feet in excitement! Okay, not literally, but any way to prepare for a CLEP exam by honestly learning the material, rather than cramming and forgetting, is a reason for excitement around here.
If you’re not all that familiar with CLEP, I explained a bit about what CLEP tests are, and JumpCourse.com also has a helpful page that is specifically for their homeschool audience.
Budget Friendly Online Courses
College is expensive; that’s a well-known fact. While credit by exam is far less expensive, some resources are still hard to stomach, especially without the luxury of financial aid, like a college student would receive. At $100/course via JumpCourse.com, it’s a resource you can feel great about investing in. Plus, if you take the CLEP within six months of starting the course and don’t pass, they’ll let you retake the course for free!
Even better, if you use the coupon code HOME50, you can receive 50% off one course through June 30, 2014! Want more? You can also get 20% off unlimited number of courses through August 30, 2014 with discount code HOME20.
You can access the class for a full year after purchasing, so you can purchase now to get the savings and start it in the fall as part of your homeschool line-up, too.
Comprehensive Online CLEP Prep
JumpCourse.com provides all the materials you need to study and prepare for a CLEP exam. Do you know how many hours upon hours I spend looking for materials that will prepare my daughter for a CLEP exam? Searching for used book options, online classes, and other various materials takes a lot of my time. With two kids 3 and under, that time is not plentiful either. In all my searching, I’ve never found such a comprehensive option. All the learning materials are online, in both written and video format, and the comprehension activities are built right in also.
Our Course – Online Psychology
For our review, we chose the CLEP Psychology course. We were planning on fitting it in this summer regardless, and honestly, I had no clue how I was going to pull the resources together. CLEP gives some general guidelines for what’s covered on their exams, but what book should I pick? Is an online high school course going to be sufficient? I just didn’t have a lot of confidence in finding what I wanted, without simply cramming for an exam and sacrificing learning the actual material in the long run.
My first thought of JumpCourse.com is how pretty it is, and easy to use! Sure, looks aren’t everything, but the design is really well done. Beyond just the looks, the content is solid, in a linear fashion, and easy to understand. I love how each section is just a little information, then activities to check for understanding. The interactive nature made it easy for my daughter to fly through the lessons quickly. No boring textbook reading for hours on end here! I typically have her start her day with the more boring, taxing assignments because after lunch, her concentration goes way down. Even though the material is at a college-level, my daughter’s able to do the lessons after lunch because it’s presented so clearly that she’s able to absorb the information easily!
What’s Next?
Our plan is to use the coupon code HOME50 (before June 30, 2014, of course!) to get 50% off and start Introduction to Sociology, and I think you should join us! Not interested in Sociology? Give Psychology, Financial Accounting or Organizational Behavior a try. With the online collaboration between students via their course forum, our students can benefit by bouncing ideas off each other! I know you’re probably a busy homeschool mom, just like me, so take something off your plate for the coming year and use the coupon code for one of the highest quality, least expensive online classes you’ll come across.

CLEP tests are new to me. I’m from a country that doesn’t have such things, but live in the US now, so I’m learning! When is it recommended for teens to start taking these tests? I’m guessing in two or three years I might have a student ready to take one.

It really depends on the student to determine when it’s best to start them with credit by exam. My daughter started last year, in her 7th/8th grade year, with subjects she really liked. We’re now starting to delve into subjects she’s less in love with, but are the typical line up, like Biology, Algebra, etc. I wrote a post a while back about when to get kids started. I hope it is helpful!

We are just starting to look at Clep testing and dual enrollment at the local community college.

Very cool! Sounds like he’s getting started on a great track with higher education. DSST offers some great exams also, and some are worth upper level credits, too!

My son has already completed Intro to Psychology/CLEP this school year. I hope to include more subjects in the future.
Shannen Espelien says
Nice! I didn’t realize you had a son old enough for credit by exam. I wish more high schoolers took a Psychology class. I think it’s so valuable.

Great review Shannon, tweeted for you 🙂

Thanks so much!

My daughter is finishing her 10th grade homeschooling. We’re thinking of doing some CLEP tests after talking with a mom last night at the used curriculum sale who had her two kids “CLEP Out” of several college classes while still homeschooling in high school. It sounded like a great and cost-conscience idea.
Shannen Espelien says
It definitely is a great way to save some money! Best wishes on getting started. It can be so exciting for both parent and student!

We have been using JumpCourse too and my kids really like it! Thanks for linking up at the Thoughtful Spot Weekly Blog Hop!

Oh yeah? That’s really neat! I had never heard of them before the review. We are now huge fans of Jumpcourse.
