Resolutions 2013!

By Shannen Espelien Leave a Comment

It’s that time of year again! Masha’Allah, 5 years ago today I started wearing hijab, and boy was that stressful! Of course we want to keep making progress each year, so what’s on your plan for the upcoming year? Here’s my humble list:

1. Increase consistency in my deen (religion)

The famous hadith reminds us:

Prophet Mohammed (saw) said “The deeds most loved by Allah(swt) are those done regularly, even if they are small.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Not only is this loved by Allah, but it sets a good example for my kids, insha’Allah. I have a habit of doing great one week, and the next I’m quite lazy. I really want to even this out.

2. Pay down debt

We have a goal to be completely debt free (besides our home). We don’t have an exact end date at this time, but it is looking about five years out. We have a plan written down, so the goal is to continue with that plan to keep on track. In this process, we are trying to teach Care Bear the value of not taking loans, and why riba (interest) is forbidden. Unfortunately, both Hubby and I walked into Islam with some debt, so we are working on that.

3. Plan Ahead

This goes for homeschool, menu planning, packing for an outing… everything. I tend to wait until the last minute and then be rushed. Again, this is not a good habit for my kids to pick up, and with a new little one on the way, I need to be more on top of my game.

Sure, lots of people have a decent size list of resolutions, but these three will keep me quite busy. The first one is really my #1 goal, and everything else is just bonus.
